What Is a Holistic Facial, and How Is It Different from a Regular Facial?

Holistic is a word that gets stretched until it means almost nothing, so here is the version we would give you across the treatment table.

A holistic facial treats your skin and your nervous system as one thing rather than two. The hands-on steps look familiar, cleansing, exfoliation, a mask, extractions where they are needed, but the treatment also accounts for stress, sleep, and the season you are living in, and it uses touch and pacing as part of the work instead of as a nice extra at the end.

That is the short answer. The longer one is where it actually gets useful, especially if you are trying to decide what to book. Most of what we describe below happens inside the custom facial rituals we offer in Portsmouth, which is where this post is heading.

What holistic actually means in a treatment room

A regular facial asks what your skin is doing. A holistic facial asks that, and then asks what is going on around it.

Those extra questions are not decoration. Skin that starts flaking in February on the Seacoast is usually responding to four straight months of dry indoor heat, not to a serum that mysteriously stopped working. Skin that gets congested along the jaw during one hard stretch at work is a different conversation than skin that stays congested all year.

One important limit. Our spa team cannot tell you what is causing anything, and a spa that claims otherwise is overstepping. We read what your skin is doing on the day we see it and build the treatment around that. Diagnosis belongs with a physician or dermatologist.

The other half of holistic is the nervous system, and this part is easy to dismiss until you have felt it. Facial massage, slower pacing, and a quiet room are not filler between the real steps. Jaw tension, brow tension, and shoulders you have been holding up near your ears all show up on your face.

Guests fall asleep on our table constantly. That is not an interruption of the treatment. It is a sign it is working.

How a holistic facial is different from a regular facial

The steps overlap almost entirely. What changes is the consultation, the role of massage, and how products get chosen.

  • The consultation goes wider. A standard facial consultation covers skin type and concerns. Ours also asks about sleep, stress, recent travel, what you have been putting on your skin at home, and what your skin was doing last week.

  • Massage is treatment, not a courtesy. In our Signature Honey & Lavender Sculpting Facial, Gua Sha is a scheduled part of the ritual rather than two minutes tacked on at the end. Gua Sha means working a smooth stone tool along the face to contour the facial muscles and encourage lymphatic drainage, which is your body moving fluid out of tissue where it has pooled. Sculpting here means that technique and nothing else.

  • Products lean toward supporting the skin barrier. The Signature facial uses Image Skincare’s Biome+ system, which is built around plant-based ingredients, fermented squalane, and adaptogenic botanicals. Squalane is a lightweight oil your skin already makes a version of. Adaptogenic botanicals are plant extracts chosen to help skin cope with stressors. Together they support a healthy, balanced barrier, which is the outer layer that holds moisture in and keeps irritants out.

  • Pacing is built into the booking. Our service lengths follow standard spa practice, and each appointment includes a brief transition period for getting settled, so the hands-on portion runs slightly shorter than the total time listed. That transition is deliberate. Nobody does their best skin work on someone who walked in three minutes ago still holding their car keys.

  • The room does some of the work. We are in a historic colonial house on The Hill in downtown Portsmouth, not a clinic hallway. If you want a sense of the space before you come, take a look at the spa.

What is not different is the skin work itself.

Holistic does not mean soft-focus. We use Image Skincare professional products, including their peel treatments, and our spa team adjusts strength and layering during the appointment based on how your skin is responding in the moment. That mid-treatment adjustment is one of the real differences between a professional facial and anything you can do at home. If resurfacing is your main goal, a corrective peel may be the better booking, on its own or worked into a facial.

What a holistic facial looks like at Blush in Portsmouth, NH

Blush does not sell a treatment called a holistic facial. We think that is worth saying plainly, because plenty of spas use the phrase as a menu item. What we offer instead are two facials that both work this way, and they suit different people.

The Signature Honey & Lavender Sculpting Facial

This is the 60 minute treatment most people mean when they search for a holistic facial. It uses raw honey from our own apiary in York, Maine, and lavender hand-picked by Scarlett, the owner’s daughter. The honey hydrates and nourishes. The lavender settles the room and the person in it. Biome+ supports the barrier, and a sculpting Gua Sha massage finishes the ritual.

One thing to raise before you book it. This treatment contains raw honey and lavender, which can carry trace pollen and other natural compounds from the flowers our bees visit. If you have a known allergy to pollen or bee products, tell us before booking and we will steer you to a different facial.

The Custom Blush Facial

Available at 45, 60, or 90 minutes, and built for people who want professional guidance without needing to know what their skin needs first. It opens with a consultation and skin analysis, then our spa team chooses products, techniques, and enhancements around what your skin is doing that day.

If you are new, book the 60 minute version. We say that to almost every first-time guest. The 45 minute facial is a genuine reset when you are short on time, but 60 gives us room to actually work rather than race the clock.

If you want extractions, book the 60 or 90 minute facial. Extractions take time to do gently and thoroughly, and squeezing them into a 45 minute appointment serves nobody. You can also layer on spa enhancements like dermaplaning, a raw honey face mask, aromatherapy, or a 15 minute Reiki add-on, which is where a lot of guests build the holistic part out further.

Does holistic mean it works less well on your skin?

No. That assumption usually comes from spas that use the word to describe an hour of pleasant massage and very little skincare.

The clinical side of a facial and the calming side are not competing for the same minutes. Exfoliation, extractions, a targeted mask, hydration, and SPF all still happen. The holistic framing changes what gets prioritized and how the hour is paced, not whether real skin work occurs.

What it will not do is deliver a result on a schedule. Consistency changes skin over months, which is why our Radiant Skin Commitment Package spaces four facials four weeks apart. One facial is a good hour. Four of them is a different conversation about your skin.

When we would point you somewhere else

A spa that recommends everything to everyone is not much use, so here is where we send people.

  • If congestion, uneven tone, or texture is your main concern, a corrective peel usually does more than a relaxing facial will.

  • If what you are really after is the nervous system reset more than the skincare, our energy work sessions are the honest answer. Reiki, energy balancing massage, and oracle sessions are restorative rather than medical, and they do not replace care from a doctor.

  • If you have an active cold sore, we cannot perform facial services. It is a guest safety policy, not fine print. Reach out and we will move your appointment.

  • Cystic acne, a persistent rash, anything that has changed shape or color, medication questions, and pregnancy safety all belong with a physician or dermatologist first. We are happy to work alongside their guidance. We are not a substitute for it.

How to book, and what to ask for

You do not need to know the right terminology. Say what your skin has been doing lately and what you want the hour to feel like, and our spa team will take it from there.

Exact pricing and availability appear in the booking calendar before you confirm anything. Book your facial in Portsmouth, or call or text us at 603-783-5656 if you would rather talk it through first.

If you are booking around a wedding, a reunion, or anything you will be photographed at, give yourself at least a week of buffer. Skin does its settling on its own timeline, not on yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a holistic facial actually do anything for my skin, or is it just relaxing?

It does both. The same cleansing, exfoliation, mask, extraction, and hydration steps happen as in any professional facial, and the products are clinical grade. What holistic adds is pacing, massage, and a consultation that accounts for what is going on in your life, not just on your face.

How much does a holistic facial cost?

You will see exact pricing and availability in the booking calendar before you confirm. Duration is the main variable, so start by deciding whether you want 45, 60, or 90 minutes.

I have sensitive skin. Is a holistic facial a safe choice?

Usually, yes, and it is often the better choice, because everything is customized to your tolerance. Tell our spa team what has irritated your skin before, and if you have any allergy to pollen or bee products, mention it early so we can keep you away from the honey and lavender treatment.

How long is the treatment, and how much of that is hands-on?

Our facials run 45, 60, or 90 minutes, and the Signature Honey & Lavender Sculpting Facial is 60. Each appointment includes a brief transition period for getting settled, so the hands-on portion is slightly shorter than the total listed time.

Can I get extractions during a holistic facial?

Yes, when they are appropriate for your skin that day. Book the 60 or 90 minute facial if extractions matter to you, since a 45 minute appointment does not leave enough time to do them gently.

How often should I come in?

Roughly every four weeks is the rhythm we build around, which is why our Radiant Skin Commitment Package spaces four facials at that interval. Coming in seasonally still helps, particularly at the two Seacoast turning points, when indoor heat starts in late fall and when salt air and sun arrive in summer.

How far ahead of a wedding or event should I book?

Give yourself at least a week between your facial and the event, and longer if you are new to professional treatments or adding a peel. If you are planning a series in advance of a date, tell us the date at your first appointment so we can space things sensibly.
