Deep Tissue Massage in Portsmouth, NH

Targeted, therapeutic deep tissue work for chronic tension, muscle tightness, and the kind of stubborn pain that never fully lets go on its own.

Some massages are about light, lullaby relaxation. Deep tissue isn’t one of them. At Blush Skin & Soul Spa, our Deep Tissue Massage is a focused, therapeutic session designed to work through the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, releasing chronic holding patterns, easing pain, and giving your body real, lasting relief.

Whether you’re a desk worker who lives with locked shoulders, an athlete recovering between workouts, or someone whose lower back has had it with you, our therapists will tailor pressure and technique to exactly what your body needs.

Choose your duration:

  • 45 minutes — targeted deep relief

  • 60 minutes — most popular (best all-around)

  • 90 minutes — deeper work + longer integration

You’ll see exact pricing and availability in the booking calendar before you confirm.

Why Choose Blush for Deep Tissue Massage

Skilled, intentional pressure

Our therapists use slow, deliberate technique to work through fascia and muscle layers, not just stronger pressure for the sake of stronger pressure. Effective work, not aggressive work.

Custom Consultation

Every session begins with a one-on-one check-in to understand your pain patterns, your stress points, and what your body actually needs that day. Pressure is calibrated to you, not to a script.

Customized Just For You

If pressure needs to ease, deepen, or shift, your therapist will adjust throughout the session. You’re always in control of how it feels.

Calm, Private Area

Soft lighting, tranquil music, and warm linens, because deep work lands deeper when your nervous system feels safe.

Our Boutique Massage Spa

You’re booked with a licensed therapist who has time for your body. No assembly line, no rushed turnover.

Who Deep Tissue Massage Is For

Deep tissue is one of the most therapeutically powerful massage modalities we offer, and it’s especially well-suited to:

  • Chronic neck, shoulder, or upper-back tension: The classic desk-and-phone pattern. We work the trapezius, levator scapulae, and rhomboids slowly and thoroughly.

  • Lower back tightness or sciatic discomfort: Targeted work through the hips, glutes, and lumbar region to ease chronic holding patterns.

  • Athletes and active bodies: Recovery work between training, races, or seasons. Helps support mobility and reduce buildup of muscle tension.

  • Postural strain: Long-haul effects of pregnancy carrying, parenting small kids, lifting work, or sitting at a screen all day.

  • Anyone who prefers firmer pressure: If light, fluffy massage doesn’t do it for you, deep tissue is the modality that finally meets your body where it lives.

If you’re unsure whether deep tissue or a more flowing, relaxation-focused style is right for you, just mention it during your check-in, your therapist will help you decide.

The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

When done well, deep tissue massage delivers benefits that go far beyond the hour on the table. Regular sessions can help:

  • Release chronic muscle tension and adhesions

  • Reduce pain patterns in the neck, shoulders, low back, and hips

  • Improve range of motion and joint mobility

  • Support recovery from workouts, races, or physical work

  • Ease stress held physically in the body

  • Improve circulation and tissue health

  • Help break the cycle of bracing and re-tightening that drives chronic pain

  • Improve posture and body awareness over time

Many of our deep tissue clients book monthly as a maintenance ritual, while others come weekly or biweekly during periods of higher physical demand.

Aftercare Tips for Your Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue work is therapeutic, and like any therapeutic work, your body integrates it best when you support it afterward. Simple habits that help:

  • Hydrate well: Water helps your body process the metabolic activity that comes with deep muscle work.

  • Move gently: A short walk, light stretching, or restorative yoga the next day helps the work integrate.

  • Heat or warm baths: An Epsom salt bath that evening can deepen and extend the benefits.

  • Skip intense workouts the same day: Give your body the rest of the day to settle. Heavy lifting or hard cardio right after deep tissue can negate some of the work.

  • Notice what shifts: Posture, sleep, mobility, mood. The benefits of deep tissue often show up in the days following the session, not just on the table.

Some mild soreness in the 24–48 hours after a deep tissue session is completely normal, similar to a good workout. If anything feels off beyond that, just text or call us and we’ll check in.

Notes & FAQ's

Do you offer couples massage?
Yes, depending on therapist availability, we can often schedule two massages at the same time in separate private rooms. If you’re planning a shared spa day, we can also recommend pairing massages and facials so you can both enjoy a full experience.

Prenatal massage timing
For safety, we do not offer massage during the first trimester.

Massage and medical care
If you are currently receiving cancer treatment, we require a note from your doctor before we can provide massage services.

Policies & guest comfort
We’re committed to a safe, respectful, and relaxing environment for every guest and provider. Blush is an ethical, boundary-driven spa. Inappropriate comments, requests, or behavior of any kind are not tolerated and will result in the session ending immediately. The full service charge will apply.

Will deep tissue massage hurt?

Effective deep tissue work can feel intense, but it shouldn’t feel like injury. Your therapist will check in on pressure throughout the session, and you’re always in control. We aim for the sweet spot where pressure is deeply effective without crossing into pain.

How is deep tissue different from a regular massage?

Deep tissue uses slower strokes and sustained, deeper pressure to work through deeper muscle and fascial layers. A standard or Custom Massage typically blends a wider range of pressure and is more about overall relaxation, while deep tissue is more therapeutically focused.

How often should I book deep tissue massage?

It depends on your body. Many clients with chronic tension book biweekly or monthly as maintenance. During periods of heavy training or higher physical demand, weekly sessions can be ideal. Even one or two sessions can produce meaningful relief from a specific pain pattern.

What duration should I book?

60 minutes is the most popular all-around option. If you have multiple problem areas or want a fuller integration, the 90-minute session lets your therapist work more thoroughly. The 45-minute option is a great targeted reset for a specific area.

Is deep tissue safe during pregnancy?

Deep tissue isn’t the right choice during pregnancy, we recommend our dedicated Prenatal Massage instead, which is designed specifically for the changes pregnancy puts on your body.

What should I do before my session?

Hydrate, avoid a heavy meal in the hour before your appointment, and arrive a few minutes early to settle in. If there are specific areas you want focused on, jot them down so they’re fresh when your therapist asks.
