Sports Massage in Portsmouth, NH
Sports massage is targeted bodywork built around what your sport actually asks of your body. At Blush Skin & Soul Spa in downtown Portsmouth, a sports massage session works the muscle groups you load most, using firmer pressure, cross-fiber technique, and slow, deliberate work through the tissue that holds the effort. Sessions run 45, 60, or 90 minutes.
You do not need to be competing at anything to book one. Most of the people on our table are training for a half marathon, back under a barbell three days a week, chasing a toddler up Prescott Park, or paddling out of Rye more weekends than not. If your body is doing repetitive work and asking for something more specific than general relaxation, this is the session for it.
Choose your duration:
-
45 minutes — targeted reset
-
60 minutes — most popular (best all-around)
-
90 minutes — deeper work + full-body ease
You’ll see exact pricing and availability in the booking calendar before you confirm.
Our Sports Massage at Blush
Firmer pressure, specific focus, real recovery work.
Your session starts with a conversation, not a technique. Your therapist wants to know what you train, what hurts, what feels tight versus what feels genuinely sore, and whether you have an event coming up. That last question changes the whole session. Work done four days out from a race looks different from work done the Tuesday after one.
From there, your therapist blends firmer therapeutic pressure with cross-fiber and compression technique through the areas carrying the most load. Where it helps, the session can include cupping, warm towels, or hot stone accents to warm tissue before deeper work. Everything is calibrated in real time, and your therapist will check in throughout to keep the pressure effective rather than just intense.

Personalized Consultation
A brief one-on-one check-in about your training, your event calendar, your problem areas, and your pressure preference.
Settling in
You undress to your level of comfort while your therapist steps out. You are securely draped for the whole session, with only the area being worked on uncovered at any time.
Intentional Pressure
Broader, flowing work opens the area before anything deeper happens. Skipping this step is what makes deep work feel like bracing instead of releasing.
Focused Areas of Relief
Slower, more specific pressure through the muscle groups your sport loads. Your therapist may work across the fiber rather than along it, which feels different from a relaxation massage and is doing something different.
Range of Motion
Where appropriate, gentle movement through the joint while the surrounding tissue is warm.
Optional enhancements
Hot stone accents, or warm towels layered in where they support the work.
Post-Massage Guidance
A grounding moment at the end so you can get up slowly rather than snapping back into your day.
Reconnect with Ease
Your therapist may share simple guidance on hydration, movement, and rest to help the session hold.
The Benefits of Sports Massage
Focused, recovery-oriented bodywork can support your training in several ways:
-
Eases muscle tightness in the areas your sport loads most
-
Supports circulation through hard-working tissue
-
Helps maintain range of motion and ease of movement
-
Supports recovery between training sessions
-
May reduce the sensation of post-exercise soreness
-
Calms the nervous system after periods of high physical demand
-
Builds body awareness, so you notice a developing issue earlier
-
Gives you a consistent recovery habit rather than a reaction to pain
Sports massage supports how your body feels and moves. It is not a substitute for medical care. If you are working through an injury, a diagnosed condition, or persistent pain, please talk with your physician or physical therapist, and let us know before your appointment so we can work appropriately.
Sports Massage, Deep Tissue, or Custom Massage?
A fair question, since all three use firmer pressure. Here is how we think about it:
-
Sports massage. Organized around your activity. The session is planned around what you train, where you are in your training cycle, and what your sport repeatedly loads.
-
Deep Tissue Massage. Organized around chronic tension. Slow, targeted pressure through deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, wherever that tension lives.
-
Custom Massage. Organized around your body that day. Your therapist blends techniques based on what shows up, which may include some of the above.
If you are not sure which fits, book the Custom Massage and say so at check-in. Your therapist will steer it.
Enhancements Worth Adding
A few of our spa enhancements pair especially well with recovery work:
-
Hot Stone Foot Reflexology, for runners and anyone spending long hours upright
-
Mint and Rosemary Back Scrub, when your back has taken the load
-
Scalp Massage with Essential Oils, for the tension that settles at the base of the skull
-
Foot Soak, a grounding start to a session after a long training week
Enhancements layer into your appointment without changing the duration you booked.
Notes & FAQ's
What is the difference between sports massage and a regular massage?
Sports massage is organized around your activity rather than around general relaxation. Your therapist plans the session based on what your sport loads, where you are in your training cycle, and what you have coming up. The pressure tends to be firmer and the focus more specific, though the session is still tailored to your comfort throughout.
Do I have to be an athlete to book one?
No. If your body is doing repetitive physical work of any kind, whether that is training, a trade, a job on your feet, or parenting small humans, this session applies. Plenty of guests book it simply because they prefer firmer, more specific pressure.
Will it hurt?
It should feel like productive work, not like something you have to endure. Firmer pressure can be intense in the moment, particularly through a tight area, but your therapist will check in and adjust throughout. Speak up the moment something crosses from useful into painful.
How will I feel afterward?
Most guests feel looser and more mobile right away. Some notice mild tenderness in the worked areas for a day or so, similar to the feeling after a good training session. Hydrate, keep moving gently, and give yourself an easy day if you can.
How often should I book?
Through an active training block, every two to four weeks is a sustainable rhythm. Around a goal event, many guests add a session three to five days beforehand and another in the week after. Even occasional sessions are worth booking.
Can I book a sports massage if I am injured?
Please talk with your physician or physical therapist first, and tell us what is going on before your appointment. We can often work around an area or focus elsewhere, but we are not medical providers and we will not work over an acute injury. If you are currently receiving cancer treatment, we require a note from your doctor before we can provide massage services.
How much does a sports massage cost?
You will see exact pricing and availability in the booking calendar before you confirm. If you would rather ask a person, text or call us at 603-783-5656.
Can two of us book at the same time?
Yes, depending on therapist availability. We can schedule two massages at the same time in separate private treatment rooms. We also have one dedicated same-room couples treatment room with very limited availability, and same-room appointments must be booked by calling or texting us directly. Anything booked online will be scheduled in separate rooms. More detail is on our couples massage page.
Massage and medical care
If you are currently receiving cancer treatment, we require a note from your doctor before we can provide massage services. If you have other significant medical considerations, please let us know ahead of booking.
Policies and guest comfort
We are committed to a safe, respectful, and relaxing environment for every guest and provider. Blush is an ethical, boundary-driven spa. Inappropriate comments, requests, or behavior of any kind are not tolerated and will result in the session ending immediately. The full service charge will apply.
